PostSubject: How To: Sign up to the Wiki and create Character pages!   Sun Feb 17, 2013 4:22 pm

Introduction

If you weren't already aware, Dearly Anonymous has an accompanying wikidot space we can use in order to a) record all our fictional universes and characters in a nice, off-site area and b) prevent all our OOC threads from being bogged up by character sheets and lore. So here's a quick guide in order to familiarize yourself with the fundamentals of the wiki: signing up and creating pages for your characters.

Part I - Signing Up

http://dearanon.wikidot.com/

Clicking that link, or pasting it into your browser's address bar and hitting enter, is the first step. You'll be taken to the main page of the Dearly Anonymous official wiki and greeted by a welcome message. If you're not already signed in, you will see a "join" button which you can click in order to go through the signup process. This is really self explanatory, so go ahead and register, confirm your email address and then log in.

Part II - Creating A Name Tab

Each user of the wiki has an option to create their own unique "tab" on the user list in order to record a list of their characters or affiliated pages. In order to find this, you should look to the left side of your screen and see a little something like this:

Simply click on the link that correlates to the first letter of your forum name. I am clicking on N-Z as N is the first letter of Nevan, my forum name, but both pages are essentially the same. You should see this:

The above is what everyone sees once you have updated your tab (or roughly what they see, anyway; it all depends on what you put in there). Here's a little hint: the writing in orange is a link to a written page, while anything in a light blue is a link to a page that has not yet been written! Assuming you are already signed in, go ahead and click the edit button at the bottom.

You should now see the above. There's a lot to explain there, so I'll just keep this simple and related to what we want to do. You will need to edit the page a little, but don't worry about messing it up, you only need to be concerned with two lines of code and what goes between them. We'll use my tab as an example here:

[[tab Nevan]]
Nevan's characters:

[[[Renaius]]]
[[/tab]]

The first line, [[tab Nevan]] is me telling the page I want to create a new tab, and then Nevan is what I want that tab to be called. Next is plain text, I simply want the contents of that tab to display "Nevan's characters:" followed by an empty line. The next line, [[[Renaius]]], is actually a link to page called Renaius. Finally, [[/tab]] is the closing line that tells the page to end the tab and to make sure that whatever's inside it doesn't "leak" out into any other part of the page.

So, what now? Well first, realize that the edit page is in alphabetical order. Don't put a tab beginning with Z, for example, above a tab beginning with S. Only put it in the Z section. So, go to the section of the edit page where your name would fit, and after a [[/tab]] line, copy and paste the example code above so that it appears like it would in the screenshot.

Change Nevan to your name, change "Nevan's" to your name, then change the name between the three link brackets into the name of the character page you want to create. For simplicity's sake, you should name the page the same as your character, so Bob's page would be called Bob. Next, you should click the preview button at the bottom to make sure everything's in order and if it is, scroll back down and click "save". Save will immediately update the page and take you to it so you can see your handiwork. Note: Save and Continue means "Save and Continue Editing", it will update the page but keep you on the edit page.

Part III - Making Your Character Page

So, now you have your own tab and in it, you have a light blue link to your character's page. Remember, the light blue means your character's page has not yet been created, so you now have to create it.

Should you click that link, it will give you the option to create that page and should you click it, it will take you to a similar edit page as the one we used before. This is all well and good, however the chances are you are not really familiar with the editing of the wikidot forum code and so need a starting template you can use for your character. Well luckily, the lovely Skuldr has supplied one for us!

||~ [[span style="color"]]Player Name || //Place Your Account Name Here//[[/span]] ||

**Character Name:** Place Your Character Name Here.
**Secondary Name:** Place Your Character's Nickname or Alias Here.
**Race:** Place Your Character's Race Here.
**Gender:** Your Character's Gender Here.
**Sexual Orientation:** Whether Your Character is Into Men or Woman Here.

++ __Appearance__

**Height:** Place Your Character's Height Here.
**Weight:** Your Character's Weight Here.
**Hair Colour:** Place Your Character's Hair Colour Here.
**Eyes Colour:** Place Your Character's Eye Colour Here.
**Skin Tone:** Place Your Character's Skin Colour Here.

//This category is the SECOND MOST important! This will help you create the image of your character which will help other players grasp what your character really looks likes because we all know a sprite can't depict the true look we aim for most of the time. So be as detailed as you want to be. Let's us know everything your character wears (optional to say everything) or if your character has multiple wardrobes include that here. Don't be shy let everyone know what your character truly looks like.//

++ __Personality & Mannerisms__

**Disposition:** Whether Your Character is Good/Evil/Nuetral.

//Include the following information such as: how your character acts around others, how your character acts alone, what makes your character happy, and what annoys/pisses off your character.//

++ __Biography__

**Character Age:** Your Character's Age Here.
**Birthdate:** Your Character's Birthday Here.
**Birthplace:** Your Character's Town of Birth.
**Occupation:** Your Character's Job Here.

//It is optional to include information on your character's past, but it is recommended to build well crafted strong characters. We recommend starting from when your character was a child, and working your way up to his/her current age. What we do require is that you update this section every month or so with incidents that have happened to your character. Our reason for asking this of you is because after you fill this template out your character's story doesn't stop it continues on adding on to the original story of your character. We understand though if this seems like a lot of work so we are fine if you want to start out with limited information here, and then build upon it.//

++ __Acquaintances__

* [[[Character Name]]]: Short explanation of encounter, and also determine whether the person is merely an acquaintance/friend/rival/or evil.

++ __Misc Facts__

**Favorite Consumption:** Your Character's Favorite Food. (Optional)
**Special Skills:** Skills Your Character is Known For Here. (Optional)

//Informational things about your character that you feel are random, and don't fall into a specific category should be placed here.//

**Example:**

* Lark's favorite musical instrument is an Electric Guitar. He enjoys traveling to Amatsu, and sitting under the Cherry Blossoms whiles playing sweet melodies on the guitar.
(this profile template can also be found under the misc section of the menu, under character sheets, as "basic EXAMPLE character sheet template")

Go ahead and copy and paste that template (which is in the wikidot code) into the edit box of your new character's page! Then all that's left to do is to fill your character profile out and click save. Make sure you do not mistakenly delete anything you were not meant to edit, as that can ruin the layout of your profile.

And that's about it! After you have done this, you should have 1: your very own wiki tab with your name and 2: a link to your own character page within that tab with a nice, filled out profile!

NOTE:

It is possible that when you click edit, you come across a warning that tells you the page is locked. Whenever a user is editing that page, it locks the edit function so that no-one can interfere with their work. This lock should last 15 minutes, and though it might be a little annoying, it's a way in which we can ensure your work is not interrupted on an otherwise PUBLIC page. You do have the option to force an unlock, but this shouldn't be used unless you are sure.
